X-Ray

What is an X-Ray Scan?

An X-ray scan is a type of imaging that is quick and painless. X-rays use radiation to create images inside of your body.

X-Ray

Your healthcare provider has referred you for a X-ray. X-rays can work towards aiding diagnosis and monitoring a range of medical conditions. This leaflet provides information about the scan, how to prepare, and what to expect during your appointment.

The Oxford Community Diagnostic Centre cannot see patients under the age of 16 for Xrays.

Booking your appointment

The CDC operates a walk-in service for X-ray.
However, to avoid delays, we recommend booking via MyDrDoctor. Alternatively, call our bookings team on 01865 226644.

People often worry about radiation from X-rays, but the exposure is minimal. The radiation level is comparable to a few days to a few years of natural environmental exposure. If you have concerns, discuss them with your doctor or radiographer.

  • Clothing:
Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or belts. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. There is space in the X-ray room to store any personal items safely during the exam.
  • Pregnancy:
Inform the Radiographer if there is any chance you might be pregnant. If you are of childbearing age, we will ask you to complete a pregnancy form
    before your appointment.

During the Scan

You may be asked to lie down, sit, or stand, depending on the area being examined.

You can usually go home or return to work immediately after the X-ray.

The results will be sent to your referring doctor, who will discuss them with you.

Your results should be with your referring doctor within 2 to 3 weeks.

If you have not received your results, please get in touch with your referring doctor.
